Let's Talk Weird #1
Hello Everyone,
Welcome to Let's Talk Weird my new monthly blog post about all the weird and wonderful things found while researching for my novel.
This week's topic. The Flat Earth Theory.
I honestly had no idea that this was still a belief! I knew of the Hollow Earthers, who founded their beliefs on the Jules Verne book A Journey to the Centre of the Earth.
But we'll discuss this particular belief in another blog post because it is it's own journey, pun intended.
Todays topic came through some research into Antarctica, a place of importance in my novel. Whilst looking into the continent I came across a lot of posts regarding how we have all been duped and that Antarctica and the Arctic are really just ice walls that keep us safe from the edge, and stop the water from running off the edge.
My mind was blown! This. Is. Huge!
Let's break this down:
1. The Earth is apparently flat.
2. The Antarctic is just a giant ice wall
3. The ice wall is meant to hold in the world's water
4. The ice wall anchors the 'dome'
One of my favourite arguments for a flat earth is that there no flight paths over Antarctica, they suppose for the above listed reasons, I propose that it is just too dangerous as any potential rescue would be too far and too perilous to justify those flight paths.
Though they do seem to believe that the pilots are being hoodwinked by the GPS companies, as apparently the data which is used by these highly trained individuals is altered so that the pilots think they are flying in straight lines around the globe, not in circles above a disc.

Let me be clear in the fact that this is a fascinating concept, but one that was disproven centuries ago.
I am fascinated by the fact that they do not believe in a spherical earth and I honestly wonder why. A spherical earth explains why we have seasons, as the earth rotates and tilts on its axis the saturation of sunlight changes creating warmer and colder climates.
I have yet to find anything to explain changing seasons in the flat earth theories, but I also haven't wanted to delve too deep either.
What I did find out however is their belief regarding day and night cycles. They posit that the sun and moon are spheres that move in circles above the earth, they also state that an 'anti moon' exists and is the cause of eclipses'.
Gravity is another thing that they don't believe in, not that it is a force on its own at least, it's simply an illusion after all. Where gravity fails however, dark energy apparently works, by propelling the disk of the earth through space thereby causing objects and people to be held against the surface of the earth with its downwards force from the acceleration...
There is even a whole 'scientific' method created by a Flat Earth believer in the 19th Century to 'prove the existence' of a flat earth. This Scientific method is called the Zetetic Method, this method allows sensory observations to reign supreme. Basically in Zetetic Astronomy the perception a person holds that the earth is flat leads to the deduction that the earth is indeed flat., the anti-moon, Photoshop and NASA conspiracies are then created to rationalize this deduction.
There a few theories thrown in the ring regarding why the worlds governments would cover up such a huge reality, most seem to regard finance as the main motive.
Honestly my position hasn't changed, I still believe that the world is round not flat, but the fact that people, well educated and well respected people, people in public positions believe that the earth is flat just absolutely staggered me!
So I shall now say check out the twitter exchange between Elon Musk and the Flat Earth Society in regards to a potential Flat Mars and my absolutely favourite exchange regarding the flat earth in a very public forum...
