Let's Talk Weird #2
Hello Everyone,
Firstly I would like to apologize for my absence, unfortunately I was quite ill and unable to function properly. But I am back to standard health and am getting back into it for you all!
Our latest trip down the rabbit hole of internet weirdness is a follow up to Let's Talk Weird #1, where we spoke about Flat Earthers, this time we are falling into the Hollow Earth.
The Hollow Earth Theory is referenced in regards to popular sci-fi/fantasy novel "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" by Jules Verne, which is believed to have helped re-popularize the theory.
Quick run down on Jules Verne, he was a french novelist, poet and playwright he was born in 1828 and died in 1905, he wrote many books, some of which are listed below;
There were theorists that later built upon and altered Halleys Model. In the 17th Century Leonhard Euler proposed a single-shell theory consisting of the outer shell and inner hollow containing a 'small sun', potentially 1000kms across, at the center with two modes (day and night) which provides light and warmth for the inner earth inhabitants. Others have proposed a 2 sun system.
In the Early 18th Century and American by the name of John Cleves Symmes Jnr. supplement this theory further with the suggestion of 'blowholes', openings approx. 2000 kms across at both poles. Symmes was entirely convinced of his theories and even campaigned for an expedition to the North Pole, eventually the President Andrew Jackson was required to intervene and put a stop to it.
Despite the study of plate tectonics in the 20th century making it obvious to most that it simply couldn't hold true that the earth was hollow the theories concerning a hollow earth multiplied, many expanding on Symmes own theory. In 1913 a man by the name of Marshall Gardner wrote the book 'A Journey to the Earth's Interior', and built a working model of his hollow earth - he then patented it.
Some theories propose that there is a city or civilization at the core of the Earth, it has a few variations on names, Agartha, Agartta, Agharti or Agrtha. Which seems to have derived from Aryavartha which to Hindus is considered the place of origins of the Vedas.
An alternate name used is Shamballa/Shambalah, which is Sanskrit for 'place of peace'. Chinese & Russian folklore and many others have their own names for similar places.
Recent Theories are more, shall we say, fantastical? Stating that the inhabitants range from Dwarves to Dragons, reptilians or other 'lost races'. They have proposed new sites for potential 'blowholes'; including Mount Shasta (California) & the Pyramids of Giza (Egypt).
Many of these more modern beliefs in the hollow earth are convoluted and varied and can be hard to pin down from the Northern lights through to secret Nazi bases, but they also have many common themes as well.
All of the theories I have read, and similar fiction works, describe the inner earth to be a lush tropical paradise. Most of these also state that this paradise is home to an advanced race of humans/giants/aliens? Many of these state that these peoples are the descendants of ancient races like the Lemurians or even The Lost Ten Tribes or Israel. However they came to be there they are almost always described as peace-loving and far more advanced then the surface dwellers. There is also a theory stating that the inner earth dwellers are the source of the UFO activity, of which the flying saucers are surveillance vehicles they use to check on us and occasionally intervene, it is also said they have wonderful health and prolonged lifespans.
It is believed that the inner earth exists at a perfect temperature day and night, allowing not just for there rumored perfect health and prolonged life spans but it also leads to heightened growth, trees up to 1000ft tall, larger animals and the humans growing to 12-15ft tall.
Why have we not been able to document travel into the 'interior' of the earth? As far as I can understand, it is once again a financial conspiracy from what quotes I can locate on the internet. A lot of our lives revolves around money, but I doubt that there is enough to cover up something this large with all the tech we have at our fingertips these days.

Jules Verne was a wonderful author and his writing has enraptured people long after his passing and many of his stories have been adapted into movies time after time.
His stories did lead a lot of people into exploring the Hollow Earth Theory and the idea of another, subterranean culture existing alongside our own Along with quite a few other writers like E.A. Poe, E.R. Burroughs, H.P. Lovecraft and Umberton Eco.

So what is the Hollow Earth Theory? Basically, exactly what it sounds like, that the Earth we live on is a hollow globe and inside is essentially another livable world.
This is certainly not a new idea, like the Flat Earth Theory it exists from the spring of belief. It makes sense in a round about way that people believed that Heaven was above so then Hell is below, a subterranean world of torment.
In 1692 Edmund Halley, of Halley Comet fame, published a paper theorizing that below the surface of the earth was another 2 levels of concentric shells and a core to the planet approximately the size of Mars. His theory did have some scientific basis, he was essentially trying to explain the discrepancies in compass readings by stating that the internal shells were spinning at different speeds causing a disruption in the magnetic fields of their own poles and subsequently disrupting the external magnetic poles and the compass readings. However he did also theorize that the inner earth was inhabited and that its atmosphere was made up of luminous gases that created the Aurora Borealis upon escaping.
